The Consulting Interview: Skills That’ll Set You Apart

Securing a consulting position involves passing through a rigorous process that goes far beyond a mere evaluation of your technical expertise. Consulting firms are keen to identify candidates who not only possess the required knowledge, but also exhibit specific skills that are crucial for success in the industry.

In this article, we’ll delve into the key skills assessed in a consulting interview, ranging from behavioral qualities and business analysis to exceptional communication skills.

Behavioral Fit

Consulting firms place a significant emphasis on cultural fit and enthusiasm for the job. Demonstrating a genuine excitement about the consulting profession and articulating why you’re drawn to a particular firm can significantly enhance your chances of success. This requires you to have a thorough understanding of the firm’s expertise.

Take a look at the company’s website, network with consultants at the firm, and research your interviewers beforehand so that you can demonstrate cultural fit and passion for the firm.

During the interview process, recruiters are keen on evaluating your behavioural traits to ensure you align with the company’s values and culture. Questions may revolve around your experiences, how you handle challenges, and your ability to work collaboratively within a team. Be ready to share past experiences that showcase your problem-solving, teamwork, initiative, resilience, and adaptability. These are key skills that are invaluable for success as a consultant, and firms are on the look out for them.

Logical Thinking

The case interview is a trademark of consulting interviews, designed to assess your ability to think logically and strategically. Candidates are presented with a real or hypothetical business problem that they are expected to “solve”.

Successful candidates will be able to showcase a methodical thought process by breaking down complex issues into more manageable components. They will be able to ask clarifying questions, structure their analysis using a clear framework, answer quantitative questions, think outside the box, and provide actionable recommendations that a client could implement.

If you’re preparing for a case interview, make sure to focus on developing a structured approach, as structured thinking is typically more important than the actual solutions that you come up with. Always articulate your thought process throughout the case interview, as this allows the interviewer to guide you in your thinking and quantitative reasoning if needed.

Communication Skills

In the consulting world, effective communication is non-negotiable. Consultants are often tasked with distilling complex data into digestible insights for clients. This is why communication and presentation skills are closely scrutinized during interviews.

Some firms, such as Capital One, take this a step further by having candidates deliver presentations as part of the interview process. Presentations typically involve a title slide, executive summary, contents and exhibits, and a conclusion with key takeaways or recommendations for clients. A strong narrative structure is necessary to structure your thoughts coherently. However, not only does a presentation task assess your ability to convey information clearly, but also to use concise language, ask for feedback, and respond to curveball questions with confidence.

The bottom line

Attaining success in your consulting interview requires more than merely showcasing your academic achievements. It’s an opportunity to demonstrate your fit with the firm’s culture, your logical thinking capabilities in the face of a challenging business problem, and your excellence in clearly distilling and confidently communicating ideas in a client friendly way.

By understanding the skills that consulting firms look for and preparing yourself accordingly, you’ll not only be able to more successfully navigate the interview process, but you’ll also be able to position yourself as a standout candidate in the competitive world of consulting.
