McKinsey, arguably the world's most prestigious management consulting firm, has managed to produce a long list of Fortune 500 CEOs. According to USA Today, more than 70 Fortune 500 CEOs are McKinsey alums. McKinsey's famous "up or out" policy results in a constant stream of departures, which means the firm loses talented consultants every year. They also face stiff competition from other top consulting firms and high paid jobs in Silicon Valley and elsewhere. With constant talent outflows and strong competition, how does McKinsey stay on top? The answer appears to be twofold. Firstly, McKinsey places strong importance on talent development. They promote their consultants quickly or help them obtain favourable positions elsewhere. Duff McDonald shares this view in his recent book The Firm: The Story of McKinsey and Its Secret Influence on American Business. In addition to talent development, McKinsey also seems to view its former employees differently when compared with other firms. Instead of seeing former employees as traitors or turn coats, they view them as valued alumni and life long members of the McKinsey family. The best way to achieve success is to emulate it, and other firms would do well to understand how McKinsey operates and apply these lessons to their own organisations. Click here to view the article

At just 14 years of age, Suvir Mirchandani could have saved the US federal and state governments up to $400 million per year with his recommendation that they change their font type from Times New Roman to Garamond. Suvir is a sixth-grade student at Dorseyville Middle School in Pittsburgh and made the calculations for a school paper, which has now been published in the Journal of Emerging Investigators. Suvir was quoted as saying, “I recognise it’s difficult to change someone’s behavior [but] I definitely would love to see some actual changes and I’d be happy to go as far as possible to make that change possible.” Very impressive work. Suvir sounds like a natural born management consultant. Do you think a traditional management consulting firm would come up with this kind of insightful recommendation? A former associate with Booz Allen is suing the firm for allegedly reneging on a pay raise granted to her in writing in an attempt to keep her at the firm. The Washington Business Journal reports that Gia Allen turned down a job offer from Thomas & Herbert Consulting on the understanding that Booz Allen would give her a pay increase and the ability telecommute. She is now suing Booz Allen for lost wages as well as around $40,000 in damages. It is fairly common for big firms to promise their employees the world and then fail to deliver. The surprising thing is that Booz Allen has allowed this to escalate into litigation. People are asking questions about Booz Allen. If the firm lacks even the simple ability to negotiate a pay issue with its own employees then what else do they lack? Some people have suggested that the firm lacks strong management, and others have gone so far as to suggest that the firm may be struggling financially. What ever the case may be, university students looking at consulting options should take this into account. Where there is smoke there is fire. For more details, read the full article.
